ESO Youth is delighted to announce its 2021 Summer Residential Course. Our 2019 residential, the first ESO has held for many years, was a huge success and we were all looking forward to a repeat in 2020 – sadly the COVID pandemic rendered it impossible. This year, as long as the easing of lockdown restrictions continues to plan, we are confident that we can run the course in a safe environment.

Our lockdown recording of Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture was a huge undertaking that kept many of our players inspired and motivated throughout last summer, so we felt it fitting we should make a real live performance part of the course this year. We will also be exploring the wonderful Seventh Symphony by Sibelius, shortly to be filmed by ESO themselves for their new ESO Digital platform. There will also be an opportunity for some large ensemble playing and a read through some other orchestral repertoire.

James Topp will conduct the 2021 course and ESO players will provide sectional coaching.

Course Structure

24th: arrival from 4pm for residents. Dinner 5:30 approx. Evening rehearsal until 8:30pm

25th & 26th: 9:30am-8:30pm

27th: 9:30am-6pm – final performance 5pm

There will be a COVID risk assessment tailored specifically to this course to include things such as social distancing if required, screens, hygiene, audience management etc. – this will be a dynamic process and will adapt to the conditions at the time. ESO Youth are delivering a number of in-person workshops and events over the coming months and will be well-versed in this process come August.
