How do you conjure up the sights and sounds of Scotland in a single piece of music? For Mendelssohn “it is in pictures, ruins and natural surroundings that I find most music” and his visit to the island of Staffa and Fingal’s Cave certainly made an immediate impression on the young composer, who was just 20 years old at the time. The English Symphony Orchestra opens their concert on 10th October 2021 at The Swan Theatre with the Hebrides Overture, one of the most evocative interpretations of the ebb and flow of the sea…
The year was 1775, Mozart had just completed his fifth violin concerto in eight months, and he was only 19 years old. It is considered to be one of his most innovative violin concertos, with its exotic ‘Turkish’ theme (which was all the rage in 18th century Europe!) This work is also a stunning example of his technical mastery of the instrument, in fact his father said of his talent “you don’t realise yourself how well you play the violin when you are on your mettle and perform with confidence, spirit and fire”. To perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.5 is South-African born violinist and Leader of the English Symphony Orchestra, Zoë Beyers.
The concert concludes with Schubert’s Symphony No.3, written when the composer was just 18 years old in 1815. At the time, Schubert was working as a full-time schoolteacher, taking composition lessons and doing some private teaching on the side and yet he still managed to compose over 200 works, including his third symphony. As a composer Schubert is synonymous with song, having written over 600 Lieder, and his sense of melody and voice is ever-present and this symphony is no exception.
